One of the surprising aspects of spring camp so far for UCLA has been the quarterbacking abilities of the walk on from Maryland named Mike Fafaul. You might be asking yourself who is this Fafaul character and why does he like to wear shirts that are 12 sizes smaller than him? Well Mike came out of high school with one lone offer from the football powerhouse New Hampshire university and decided to instead walk on at UCLA due to his love of coach Mazzone’s teaching abilities. You can read more about Fafaul’s background and his motivation in football in the article linked here.
For all the none expert observers at the spring practices (including myself) who went to check out the abilities of the quarterbacks in the UCLA roster, Fafalu really stood out to me because number one, I had no freaking idea who the hell he was, and number two, he had a very quick release almost quicker than me in the bedroom. Also, to my untrained eye, it appeared as though he was the most accurate out of all the QBs when it came to hitting the receivers on short passes which is the key staple of Mazzone’s offensive scheme. I for one would like welcome Fafaul to the bruin family and wish that everyone of the QB’s on our roster starts off the spring with a level playing field in the coaches eyes to where the best man wins the job… Period. Go Bruins!
